Halal-N-Tayyib General FAQs
What is Tayyib and why it is important?
We believe that Tayyib is the highest form of agricultural practices and animal rearing care that goes beyond organic such as grass-fed regenerative agriculture and animal rearing practices, rotational grazing and the ethical humane treatment of animals and so much more. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of emphasis placed on eating Halal but there is far less emphasis on whether meat is Tayyib, which is just as important and deeply rooted in our Islamic principles. Halal and Tayyib is not a new concept. It has always been the core principle and the intent of our Deen. We believe that eating Tayyib (wholesome nutritious and clean) food is not a luxury or a matter of choice but is a religious obligation to take care of bodies that are a trust from Allah SWT. Eating Tayyib is a religious, agricultural, and conscious act that have wide ramifications on the whole food ecosystem that we are entrusted to take cake of justly.
Is Organic the same as Tayyib?
The farming method closest to Tayyib in modern times is organic farming. Tayyib is considered the highest standard for agricultural practices and animal care, emphasizing grass-fed regenerative agriculture, rotational grazing, and humane treatment of animals.
Animals are exclusively born and raised on the farm, with no auction-purchased animals allowed. Eating Tayyib food is viewed as a religious duty, deeply connected to a person's Deen.
In Islam, the treatment, rearing, health, and welfare of animals, as well as their rights over humans, are all significant factors, including the method of slaughter.
While there is a strong emphasis on consuming Halal food, the importance of Tayyib meat is equally crucial and deeply rooted in Islamic teachings. The concept of Halal and Tayyib has always been fundamental, with references in the Quran, such as Surah al Baqarah verse 168, highlighting its significance.
At Halal-N-Tayyib Meats, we are committed to surpassing the standards of Halal and adhering to Allah's instructions to embrace what is Tayyib, as it brings benefits to us, the animals we consume, and the environment. Our mission is to reintroduce the essence of Tayyib to the meat industry in its most authentic state, sourced directly from the farm. We aim to cultivate a community that is devoted to consuming high quality nourishing meat while supporting local farms in a mutually beneficial partnership. Learn more here.
Who slaughter your animals?
The way your meat is butchered is just as important as how it is raised. In contrast the questionable accreditations of major Halal meat companies, we guarantee that each of our animals is individually stun-free and horizontally hand slaughtered by the owner himself and processed one by one at a Halal-certified USDA facility that is both family owned and operated with over three decades of experience.
Why is your meat Zabiha and not just Halal, and are you halal zabiha CERTIFIED?
Halal in regards to food means permissible to eat. Zabiha is the method that the animal was slaughtered. Zabiha method is a requirement in Islamic Law. We adhere to the strictest definition of Halal slaughter.
We currently don’t have any Halal certification for mainly for two reasons: As a small farm the cost of for-profit certification is quite expensive for us. The small scale farm operation does not justify the cost.
We don't want to support such organizations because a lot of them are involved with shady businesses that compromise on the hand Zabiha shariah requirement due to greed. They allow machine slaughter, stunning and other practices that we believe contradict the true meaning of Halal.
Our founder, Rachid; hand slaughter all the animals himself following HMS guidelines. This is the only organization with the Sharia board of America; which is a no-profit; that is leading the way with monitoring halal slaughter. We support their work because their mission is aligned with ours. We have applied for the HMS (Hand Slaughter Services) for almost a year, but unfortunately, the brothers from HMS couldn't visit us due to the schedule conflict and availability of stuff. Hopefully we can get complete this process very soon inshaAllah! How does your meat share system work?
Secure your preferred meat share (Quarter, half, or whole cow, whole lamb/goat, and or whole chicken share) by placing an order and confirming it with a deposit. Whether you are ordering for yourself or acting as a host for a buying club, the process is straightforward. Once the deposit payment is received, your order will be reserved. Shortly after, you will receive an email containing the Cutting Instructions Form, allowing you to specify how you want your meat to be prepared. All meat shares will be handled in the sequence they are received.
When your meat is prepared for pickup or delivery, we will reach out to you to arrange a convenient appointment time. Your meat share will be meticulously vacuum sealed and frozen at its peak freshness before being delivered to your doorstep. The remaining balance is to be settled at the time of pickup or upon delivery, with the deposit being deducted from the total cost of your order.
Can you elaborate on hormone treatments and its effects in animals?
In order to increase profits, certain farmers administer hormones to beef cattle and sheep to accelerate their growth, as well as to dairy cows to enhance milk production. However, the USDA prohibits the use of hormones on chickens. The widespread application of hormones (rBHG-free) in meat and dairy products could potentially elevate the risk of cancer in humans and lead to increased infection rates in animals.
Items labeled as "organic" must not originate from cows treated with rGBH. While there is no distinct certification for hormone-free products, both organic and grass-fed designations prohibit the use of hormones in their production.
Why is your meat frozen?
Our meat undergoes a meticulous preservation process where it is vacuum packed and rapidly frozen to a chilling -30 degrees Fahrenheit. Unlike the conventional freezing methods used by our customers at home, our advanced processor ensures that the meat is frozen at a much faster rate. By doing so, we are able to lock in the essential nutrients and flavors, guaranteeing that the taste and freshness of our product remain intact. This exceptional preservation technique maintains the high quality of our meat, ensuring that you always have access to top-notch cuts.
How do I thaw the meat?
Thawing frozen meat is best done by leaving it in its original packaging overnight in the refrigerator. However, if you need to thaw the meat more rapidly, you can place the sealed package in cool water for a few hours. It is important to avoid using hot water or a microwave as this can inadvertently cook the meat.
What should I do once I receive my meat share?
We encourage you to freeze your order immediately upon arrival unless you plan to thaw and eat it immediately.
Our vacuum-pack method keeps our meat fresher for longer, however, FDA guidelines advise that you consume frozen meats within a year of purchase.
Where does your beef, chicken, goat, and lamb come from?
The cows, chickens, lambs, and goats that we offer originate from our farm and local partners, who undergo thorough inspections and are trusted to uphold our animal raising practices.
What is your return policy?
Perishable goods such as meat are exempt from being returned. However, our client's satisfaction is our priority number one.

We invite you to explore our blog page, where you can discover more about the numerous health benefits associated with grass-fed meat. By choosing Halal-N-Tayyib, you are making an informed decision that prioritizes both flavor and the well-being of your loved ones.
What are the health benefits of grass-fed beef?
Grass-fed beef has been scientifically proven to have a lower fat content and less saturated fat compared to conventional grain-fed meat. Additionally, it contains a higher protein content, making it a healthier choice.
Meats labeled as "Choice" and "Prime," which typically have a fat content ranging from 35-65%, are raised or finished on GMO grain. This high fat content is not beneficial for health.
On the other hand, true pasture-raised meat contains only 15-25% fat, deriving all its flavor from the quality of the meat itself.
The result is not only delicious but also healthy beef that is rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fats and low in inflammatory omega-6 fats.
Furthermore, according to a Mayo Clinic Study, grass-fed beef is also higher in antioxidant vitamins like vitamin E and contains more conjugated linoleic acid, a type of fat that is believed to reduce the risks of heart disease and cancer.
Isn't all beef grass-fed?
Throughout their lifespan, it is a common occurrence for all cattle to consume grass at certain stages. However, in the United States, the majority of cattle are provided with a diet consisting of corn in a feedlot for approximately five months prior to their slaughter. This particular period of five months accounts for nearly one-third of their entire existence. It is undeniable that granting cattle the opportunity to graze on grass and freely roam for the entirety of their lives is a more compassionate approach towards the animals and contributes to the long-term sustainability of our land.
Does grass-fed beef taste different than conventionally fed beef?
Beef from cows that are fed grass does not have the same taste as beef from cows that are fed corn. Our beef contains less fat, and the fat present in grass-fed beef has a lower melting point compared to corn-fed beef. This unique characteristic gives our beef a distinct flavor that is often described as "cleaner."
Why is grass-fed beef more expensive?
Grass-fed beef is priced slightly higher than industrial beef due to the increased production costs associated with it. We, along with our farmers, firmly stand by this decision without any apologies. Our commitment to not using hormone implants, confinement feeding, antibiotics, or high carbohydrate feeds sets us apart. While these tools have been developed by science to reduce costs in beef production, eliminating them leads to higher production costs. It would be financially unsustainable for a farmer to produce high-quality grass-fed beef and sell it at the same price as commodity beef.
Moreover, choosing grass-fed beef can have a significant impact on your health. Compared to conventionally raised cows that are fed a corn-based diet supplemented with antibiotics and growth hormones, grass-fed beef is higher in healthy unsaturated fats and lower in saturated fats. Dr. Katz, MD, a member of the Prevention advisory board, recommends opting for grass-fed beef if you consume beef at all. The nutritional benefits make it a healthier choice.
However, with our share system and the assistance of Allah (SWT), we strive to make Halal, local, and grass-fed meats affordable. In fact, by purchasing a share from us, you can save up to 50% compared to retail prices for halal grass-fed meat if it were available. We believe that everyone should have access to high-quality, ethically produced meats, and our share system allows us to make this possible.
How big is a cow share?
You can pick a quarter, half or whole. To find out what is included with each of these check out our “grass-fed beef packages” page.
How many people does it take to fill a whole Cow Share?
Typically, it takes 4-8 people to fill a Cow Share. That's it! Decide how many shares you would like to get and find the rest of the people to take other shares. Talk to your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers about joining you in a whole cow order. Many people email friends their cow share link but others prefer sharing it via social media. Sit back and watch your Cow Share fills.
How do I know which share to pick?
A 1/4 beef share is great for a family of four or can be split with a friend. A quarter of beef will easily fit into a 5 -7 cubic foot chest freezer. It can be split into half (1/8) beef shares; which is a starting point for those interested in sampling a large variety of our cuts, but without the commitment (or freezer space) required for a Half or Whole cow. It will fit into a refrigerator freezer.
A 1/2 (side) beef share is the perfect size for a large family. A half beef needs about 8 cubic feet.
A whole cow is best deal for a large family. You should plan for at least 16-17 cu.ft. freezer space for a whole beef. If freezer space is a concern to you, you will need to buy a freezer prior to receiving your meat share. The rule of thumb is one cubic foot of freezer space for every 35–40 pounds of packaged meat. For example, if you prefer your steaks a bit thinner or thicker, want more ground beef and less roast, etc, we will do everything possible to accommodate your needs. Just let us know when you place your order.
If you ordered 1/4 share, we would match you with other people who requested the same cut. Our processor can only cut a side or whole cow in the same cut.
What is the difference between Live Weight and Hanging Weight?
Lets assume an average sized two years old steers weighs approximately 1,000 lbs; that weight is called the “live weight”. To keep the arithmetic ,simple we’ll assume a 1,000 lb. steer. Heifers would also be lighter than steers. Once the animal is slaughtered however, the skin, head, non usable organs, and hooves are removed and the carcass is split down the middle and weighed, giving the butcher the “hanging” or “carcass weight”, which is usually around 60% of the live weight. The two “sides” are then hung in a cooler for 10 days to two weeks to age. This improves tenderness, enhances flavor and also further reduces weight due to evaporation.
Our grass fed cattle generally have a hanging butcher weight of 750-850 pounds after they are harvested.
What is the difference between Hanging Weight and Take Home Weight (Boxed Weight)?
After aging, each side is fabricated into individual retail cuts. The weight after this process is called the “boxed”, “take home”, or “retail” weight. It’s important to know that after butchering, the boxed weight will be significantly less than the hanging weight. The percentage of the hanging weight that remains is called the “carcass cutting yield” or “yield” for short and is generally around 60% of hanging weight. This percentage varies based on a number of factors including:
Bone-in vs. boneless – This will dramatically affect yield; the more boneless cuts that are made, the lower the yield. It will not however significantly affect the actual amount of meat you receive.
The amount of fat remaining on the meat cuts – The yield will vary based on how much surface fat the cutter leaves on the cuts.
Leanness of ground beef – If the ground beef is made very lean the yield will be less than if the ground is made with a higher percentage of fat.
How much meat will I take home?
The amount of meat yielded from a steer can be generally calculated based on some approximations. The dressed or hanging weight can be assumed to be around 60% of the live weight. About 48-75% of the carcass weight will be the amount of packaged meat you can put in your freezer. This value can vary due to many factors such as boneless or bone-in steaks, the amount of fat left on steaks and not trimmed, the ratio of fat to lean in the ground beef, the fat and muscle composition of the specific animal, and more.
Obviously it is impossible to calculate exactly how much meat a steer will yield before hand, and other people may assume a higher or lower percentage of the animal will be meat but this equation will give you a decent ballpark idea of what you can expect.
What will I get with a side or whole cow order?
Every cow is a little different, but the average weight for a side is approximately 180 lbs of beef or 360 lbs of beef for a whole cow. These weights are divided into about 45% ground beef, 25% as roasts, 25% as steaks, and 5% as smaller pieces like stew beef. A complete list of every item is provided on the online order form.
What does this all mean?
As an example let’s say you are ordering a side of beef from an animal with a live weight of 1,000 lbs and a hanging weight of 600 lbs. The hanging weight of the side you are receiving is 300 lbs. Your total cost, assuming a $6.00 price per pound of hanging weight would be $1,800, (300 lbs x $6.00). Assuming a yield of 60% the actual weight of the beef you would receive would be 180 lbs (300 x .60).
Now to complicate things more, lets also say you are splitting the side amongst four friends (including yourself) giving each person an eighth. Everyone wants to know what they will have to pay and how much meat they will actually receive. What each 1/8 share will pay is easy, $1,800 divided by 4 which equals $450. Then, to calculate the boxed weight of any of the eighths, just divide the 180 lbs of take home weight by 4 and each eighth share will receive about 45 lbs of meat to put in their freezer. Cuts of beef aren’t widgets so the actual weight of each of the eighths will vary somewhat,
To compare this with what you are paying for retail cuts of grass fed beef in the store, you can translate it to a price per pound of meat received by dividing the price per pound of hanging weight by the yield percentage. So in the case above the price per pound would be $10.00 ($6.00/.60). Since this includes everything from ground beef to more expensive steaks I think you will find it works out very favorably compared to most retailer’s prices for grass fed and finished beef.
What is dry aging?
Forty years ago, most of our beef was dry aged. Starting in the early 1960's vacuum packaging became more popular and convenient. This was an advantage to the processor because they could wet age the beef in the bag. This would allow the beef to retain it's weight, making it more cost effective. This however changed the taste of beef, and slowly the consumer became used to this and began to forget what real taste of beef was.Beef that is dry aged forms a crust on the outside of the loin similar to the texture of beef jerky. During this dry aging process, the juices are absorbed into the meat and the natural enzymes go to work to make the beef more more tender and flavorful. After the dry aging is finished that crust is trimmed away. Here is a great article about dry aged beef.
Is there a certain way grass-fed beef is cooked?
You can use grass fed beef in any of your favorite recipes. Grass-fed beef is leaner than grain-fed, and the lower fat content will effect your cooking times and styles. “Low and slow” works great for roasts. Steaks do well seared in butter. Grass-fed burgers are best cooked rare to medium. Check out the American Grass-fed Beef Association for more tips. For information on how to cook grass-fed beef check out our Cooking Tips and Recipes pages for great grass-fed dinner ideas.
How old are the cattle at harvest?
Our grass fed cattle are harvested between 24-36 months of age.
What is the Grade of your Beef 🥩?
Our cattle are grass fed grass finished so they are not graded like grain finished cattle. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. They just don’t compare. It’s like trying to grade a deer or an elk it’s not going to equal out or be on the same grading scale as the cattle shipped back to the mid west and grain finished / force fed the last 90 days of its life in a crowded inhumane feed lot.

What Is the Difference Between Pasture-Raised Chicken and Conventional (Store-Bought/Factory Farmed) Chicken?
CONVENTIONAL FACTORY CHICKENS
The chickens we buy in stores today are the product of a system of oppression of both the human beings that raise them and the animals themselves. These conventionally raised chickens (store-bought/factory farmed) are grown in packed warehouses, eating only genetically modified feed filled with antibiotics and/or Arsenic to prevent the birds from dying due to the unsanitary conditions they are held in.
Conventionally raised birds never see the sun in their whole 8 weeks of life, are crowded and only feed on genetically modified grains. This is why the chicken Skin and the chicken itself has become so unhealthy; the meat and the fat of the chicken is comprised of the corn and soy oils it has fed on all of its life. When we eat the chicken then, it will raise our cholesterol due to the unnatural and oppressive conditions it was raised on. Since the chickens are raised in confinement and on cheap grains funded through government subsidies, store-bought conventional chicken (yes, even the “Halal” one!) are unrealistically inexpensive.
PASTURE-RAISED CHICKENS
Pasture-raised chickens are raised outdoors, on fast-growing spring and summer grasses. They are moved about in open-air chicken tractors, and supplemented with organic or non-genetically modified grains.
The Pasture-Chicken is able to get sunlight and has enough room to move so it is healthier and has significantly less stress throughout its life. Nutritionally, the Pastured chicken is superior because it is feeding on a mixed diet as Allah SWT has created it to. Chickens are omnivorous, and in nature they eat bugs, grasses, seeds and grains. All of these needs are met in the Pastured chicken, putting barakah in its meat. The grasses it feeds on means that it has significantly more Omega-3 fatty acids, high concentrations of Vitamin-A as well as mineral-dense bones from adequate vitamin D and calcium absorption.
All this to say, you are what you eat. Pastured chicken is not only healthier for you, it is SIGNIFICANTLY more delicious than conventionally raised chickens. Nutrients are yummy! So in this case, if it tastes good, its good for you!

How much meat is on a lamb or a goat?
A typical cut yield is somewhere around 70% off of the hanging weight, but this depends on how you have your lamb butchered. More bone-in cuts, organs, and bones will increase your yield and the overall value. Cut yield also varies somewhat from animal to animal. Per the example above, you might expect to get around 35-50 pounds of meat in total.
Hanging Weight– also known as dressed weight or carcass weight – is what you get when you remove the parts that are inedible like the hide, feet, head, some of the bones and most of the innards. The dressing percentage for most lambs is about 54%. A 100 lb. lamb will have a hanging weight or dressed weight of approx. 54 lbs.
Is that how much I take home?
No. You take home the finished cuts or “yield”. The percentage of the hanging weight that remains is called the “yield” and is generally between 55% - 70% of hanging weight. This percentage varies based on a number of factors including:
Bone-in vs. boneless cuts – This will dramatically affect yield; the more boneless cuts that are made, the lower the yield.
The amount of fat remaining on the meat cuts – The yield will vary based on how much surface fat the cutter leaves on the cuts.
A lamb that dresses at 50 lbs. will usually yield between 35-40 lbs. of take home meat.
What sort of cuts will I get?
You specify with us how you want your lamb cut and packaged, according to your tastes and needs. Because the carcass and yield are relatively small compared to buying even a quarter beef, your options are somewhat limited. Even so, we are happy to walk you through the process and help you determine which cuts will be most useful and give you the most yield for your money.
How much freezer space will I need for my lamb?
Plan on approximately one cubic foot of freezer space for every 15-20 pounds of meat. The interior of a milk crate is slightly more than a cubic foot. For a lamb, you will need 2 cu. Ft of freezer space. A whole, processed lamb/goat will likely fit in the freezer that comes with your refrigerator.

We will do our best to get as close as possible to your requested hanging weight, but this is merely an estimate, and we cannot guarantee an exact weight. In case of excess weight due to the lamb 's size, the weight will be adjusted to the requested weight. The price per pound will always be the same. Order online, call us or email us and we will discuss availability and options. Once we confirmed your order and the availability of the animal, we will contact you so you can reserve your lamb/goat by paying a $200 non-refundable deposit. It will be deducted from your final balance.
How much do I save by buying a whole lamb/goat?
For lambs or goats, the live weight varies from approximately 80-140 pounds. The hanging weight (after removal of head, hooves, most bones, offal, etc.) is about 50% of the live weight. The actual meat you receive (boxed weight) will be less due to the cutting away of the remaining bones and fat. We are able to provide you with the average weight of a lamb for estimating purposes, but each animal is different and your final price will reflect this. The butchering fee is calculated into the purchase price. Once your meat is ready, we will make arrangement with your for home delivery.
A whole lamb or goat share will yield approximately between 35 and 55 pounds of meat cuts once it has been custom cut & packaged. The share cost depends on each animal's age, cutting method, and final hanging weight.

Eid Udhiya Qurbani FAQs
What is Qurbani/Udhiya
Qurbani, or Udhiyah as it known in Arabic, is the word that describes the sacrifice of an animal to Allah SWT during the period of Eid ul-Adha. On Eid Ul-Adha, which marks the completion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, the Muslim world celebrates and honors the tradition of the Prophet Ibrahim (Alayhi Salaam) by sacrificing an animal and distributing the meat to those in need. Qurbani teaches us obedience, devotion and promotes the idea of helping other Muslim brothers and sisters. The meat from Qurbani is divided into three portions; one for the family, one for the neighbor and one for the poor. Islam preaches about neighbors’ rights and of those who live in poverty. Qurbani, therefore, serves as a means to look out for the poor and the needy
What is Dhul Hijjah
Dhul Hijjah is the final month in the Islamic calendar, the month in which Muslims all over the globe embark on Hajj and offer their Qurbani sacrifices for the love of Allah (SWT). The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are actually the most sacred days of the whole year, and our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) tells us that “there are no days in which good works are more beloved to Allah than these days” (Bukhari).
What are the days of Qurbani
The days of Qurbani are the 10th, 11th and 12th of the month of Dhul Hijjah in the Lunar calendar
Who should give Qurbani

What animals are sacrificed at Qurbani
The animals to be slaughtered at Qurban are goats, sheep, cattle (cows or bulls), buffalo or camels. According to the rules of Qurbani, they can be male or female, but should be in good health, free from disability or handicap, and above a certain age. Goats and sheep must be at least one year old, while cattle must be two years, and camels five years
How many Qurbani animals do I have to sacrifice
Qurban animals have shares. Sheep and goats have one share each, cattle each have seven shares. So for a single person, Qurbani is fulfilled with a sheep or a goat. Up to seven people can share in the purchase of a cow or a camel, and the sacrifice will be made for the seven.

Aqeeqah FAQs
What is the ruling on Aqeeqah?
Aqeeqah holds great significance in the Islamic tradition and is considered a highly recommended practice by the majority of scholars. While some scholars view it as obligatory, this is a minority opinion. Imam Hasan Al-Basri is among those who consider it obligatory. The practice of aqeeqah is deeply rooted in the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him), who was a staunch believer in the Oneness of Allah. By performing aqeeqah, parents initiate their child into the teachings of tawhid, emphasizing the exclusive worship of Allah.
It is important to note that aqeeqah should be planned in advance due to the limited availability of grass-fed animals for the sacrifice. By placing an order ahead of time, proper arrangements can be made to ensure the fulfillment of this practice. It is recommended to contact the relevant authorities to inquire about the availability of animals. In cases where it is not possible to perform aqeeqah on the seventh day, it can be done on the fourteenth, twenty-first, or at the earliest convenience. However, unnecessary delays should be avoided.
In conclusion, aqeeqah is a significant Sunnah that all Muslims should strive to practice, especially if they have the means to do so. It serves as a reminder of Prophet Ibrahim's devotion to the Oneness of Allah and provides an opportunity for parents to instill the principles of tawhid in their children. By planning ahead and making necessary arrangements, the observance of aqeeqah can be carried out in a timely manner, ensuring its proper fulfillment.
