Soy-Free vs. Tayyib: The Omnivore Truth

Beyond the Marketing Slogan

Walk through any farmers market and you’ll see it everywhere: “Soy-Free Chicken!” It sounds clean and healthy. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: “Soy-Free” has become a marketing slogan — not a nutritional standard.

□ THE MYTH: "Vegetarian-Fed"

Reality: Chickens are natural omnivores. Forcing a vegetarian diet removes insects, larvae, and animal proteins they were designed to eat.

□ THE MYTH: "Soy-Free" = Healthy

Reality: Soy-free feeds often substitute corn, canola, distillers grain, or animal byproducts — which may still be GMO, chemically sprayed, or religiously questionable.

The Whole Food Difference

Traditional pasture pioneers historically used whole roasted soybeans rather than extracted soy meal. Whole foods behave differently in the bird’s metabolism than separated industrial protein fractions. When soy is removed entirely, protein must still be replaced — and that is where many compromises begin.

Forage Is Protein — And Estrogen

Chickens on pasture consume clover, grasses, insects, worms, and wild forage daily. Clover itself contains natural plant estrogens. To eliminate all estrogen exposure, birds would have to be removed from pasture entirely — which defeats the regenerative system.

In other words: pasture itself is part of the protein equation.

Alternative Soy-Free Protein Strategies

When producers remove soy, they must replace 16–20% protein levels with alternatives such as:

  • Dried Distillers Grain (≈38% protein)
  • Field Peas & Flaxseed
  • Fish Meal

Is the chicken sold at Restaurant Depot from your farm?

No, the chicken sold at Restaurant Depot is not sourced from our farm. While it’s labeled as "Halal and Tayyib wholesome chicken," it is actually produced by Koch Foods, one of the largest poultry processors in the country, and undergoes mechanical slaughter.

We do not currently offer wholesale options. Our chickens are raised on our small family farm, hand-slaughtered, processed by us, and delivered directly to our customers.

Pasture-raised chickens are raised outdoors, on fast-growing spring and summer grasses. They are moved about in open-air chicken tractors, and supplemented with organic or non-genetically modified grains.

The Pasture-Chicken is able to get sunlight and has enough room to move so it is healthier and has significantly less stress throughout its life. Nutritionally, the Pastured chicken is superior because it is feeding on a mixed diet as Allah SWT has created it to.

The chickens we buy in stores today are the product of a system of oppression of both the human beings that raise them and the animals themselves. These conventionally raised chickens (store-bought/factory farmed) are grown in packed warehouses.

Conventionally raised birds never see the sun in their whole 8 weeks of life, are crowded and only feed on genetically modified grains.

Chicken Shares & Ordering

Our pasture-raised chicken shares are available year-round thanks to Georgia’s mild climate and continuous pasture access.

A typical share averages about 40 lbs of premium chicken cuts. Final weight varies by breed and cut style. Organs and feet are optional add-ons.

Shares start at $300 with a $150 deposit. You may choose whole birds or custom-cut packages. Additional butchery options and organ meats are available.

A custom cut allows you to choose how your birds are processed: whole, parted, boneless, or specialty cuts based on breed and preference.

Orders are secured with a deposit online, by phone, or email. The deposit reserves your birds for the next slaughter date and is applied toward your final balance.

The remaining balance is due when your order is ready for pickup, local delivery, or shipping.

All pricing includes humane slaughter, USDA-inspected processing, vacuum-sealed packaging, labeling, and cold-chain handling.

You may pick up from the farm, meet at a designated hub, receive home delivery, or ship in insulated bulk packaging to reduce waste and cost.

Our birds are pasture-raised, moved daily, never medicated, and humanely processed. This costs more than industrial confinement farming but delivers far superior ethics, flavor, and nutrition.

No. Those products come from large industrial processors. Our chickens are raised on our own family farm, hand-slaughtered, and delivered directly to CSA members.

Raising & Farming Practices

We follow the Joel Salatin pasture-based model using mobile chicken tractors moved daily to fresh grass for clean living conditions and natural soil regeneration.

Chicks arrive day-old from independent hatcheries, spend 3 weeks in protected brooders, then live outdoors on pasture in mobile shelters moved daily until harvest.

Each bird enjoys about 60 square feet of pasture over its lifetime, foraging grass, bugs, and seeds which naturally boost Omega-3s and micronutrients.

Cornish Cross (5–6 weeks): tender, high breast yield
Kosher King (10–11 weeks): rich flavor and firm texture
Red Broilers (11–14 weeks): more dark meat, deeper flavor
