How Do We Raise Our Meat Broilers
We follow Joel Salatin's model for raising meat broilers which are specifically bred to have a high meat yield and grow at a faster rate compared to chickens raised for egg-laying purposes. To begin the process, we acquire chicks from an independent hatchery and provide them with a warm and protected environment in a brooder.
After 3 weeks, we transition them to pasture, where they are housed in portable shelters measuring 12 ft. X 10 ft. X 2 ft built following Joel Salatin's design. We move these shelters daily to fresh grass for the broilers to eat. Each shelter accommodates around 75 birds, allowing each bird to enjoy an average of 60 square feet of pasture over the course of 5-6 weeks for the Cornish Cross broilers, ad 10-11 weeks for the kosher king ones. While the chickens primarily consume 10-15 percent of their diet in forages, the green leaves they consume play a vital role in promoting their overall health and providing essential nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids.
Depending on their growth, we process these broilers at 8-13 weeks depending on the breed. It is important to note that these birds are fed a non-GMO ration sourced from a local Georgia feed mill, ensuring that they do not ingest any fecal particulate like factory-raised birds. Additionally, they benefit from fresh air, natural sunlight, and are kept in small groups to minimize stress.
