About Our Beef Shares

"You, as a food buyer, have the distinct privilege of proactively participating in shaping the world your children will inherit."
- Joel Salatin (An American farmer, lecturer, and author)

Cow Share System: What Is It?

Picture
Purchasing a cow share is the way for individual customers to buy premium quality Halal Black Angus beef in bulk without breaking the bank.

When you purchase beef through us, you are buying a portion (share) of a live animal, either a whole, half (side), or quarter (split side). No matter how small your freezer or how big your table (and why not split a share with your brother, co-workers or neighbor), we offer a variety of packages to choose from.

You will get a wide variety of different cuts of meat while splitting the cost with others. All your meat is pre-cut, vacuum sealed wrapped and ready for your freezer. The cuts will keep in the freezer for at least two years.

How Does Cow Share System Work?

At Halal-N-Tayyib Meat Shares, we arrange cow shares year-round, but especially during the pick season. Once a cow share is filled, we process the said Black Angus steer or heifer cow (raised by us or by our partner farmer) on behalf of the cow share members. The total cost of our beef includes the price of the live cow in addition to the processing charges.

When it’s time to slaughter your shared cow, we or our partner farmer will take the animal to the slaughter house for processing. The beef will hang (or age) for 10 to 14 days before the processor cuts the beef up according to your specifications. Don't worry, we will help you along the way as the arrangements and cutting instructions are taken care of! If you are interested in organ meats, please let us know prior to harvest so we can make those arrangements. You can complete your customized order for cutting up your beef using our online order form at the time of order.

We will contact you shortly after the aging process to let you know when to pick your beef up and/or to arrange with us for home delivery!

Butchering, Processing, and Weight

The animal will be slaughtered by hand by our founder; Rachid Chafyaay; according to Islamic slaughtering law.
  • Hanging Weight: after removing the skin and any unusable portions such as organ meats of the cow, the animal’s carcass will be weighted. This weight is about 50% the weight of “live weight” or “on the hoof” weight of a live cow, and this the weight that is reported by the slaughterhouse to determine the cost of processing the cow.
  • Packaged/Take Home Weight: is how much actual meat that you can put back into your freezer. You can expect between 35% to 45% loss from hanging weight to packaged weight due to water weight loss, evaporation during chilling, fat trimming, gristle removal, and deboning. However, your take home weight will depend largely on your cutting instructions, like if you want your meat bone in or not for example (Bone-in vs. Boneless cuts). This will dramatically affect yield; the more boneless cuts that are made, the lower the yield. The usual average yield (packaged meat) ranges between 55%-65% of the hanging weight depending on the cutting method.

What’s Generally Included in the Standard Cut?

The exact number and weight of of cuts will vary depending on the size of the animal and the size of the steaks and roasts. Generally, a standard beef share includes approximately 23 % Steaks , 47% Roasts & Misc Cuts, and 34% Ground Beef. Click here for a detailed example of our standard cut.

Cow Share Cost

The cost of your beef share is based on the hanging weight of the cow which is different for each animal. A whole cow costs $6.50 per hanging lb, a half costs $6.75 per hanging lb, and a quarter costs $7.00 per hanging lb. Processing, butchering, and packaging fees are included. The take home cost per pound ranges between $8.50 and $10.50 depending largely on how you cut your beef. The standard cut; which is the preferred cut by most of our clients; yields more meat and costs less per pound.

Since we are small family owned and operated business, we focus on quality and not quantity. Unlike large scale corporate fed-lots, our grass-fed beef cattle are seasonal and not mass produced, so quantities are very limited. Make sure to place your order today!

*Market Prices: Prices may change monthly due to changes in the market and can be verified at time of order.

Meat Shares Ordering Options

Our Beef Shares include four packages options, all at premium quality and exceptional value. You can purchase 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 or a whole share of beef to feed your friends and family throughout the year.

When you buy a beef share, you get a significantly lower price per pound on favorites like filet, ribeye, and strip. Plus, our price is all inclusive, which means no wondering about the hanging weight or processing fee. Additionally, for half and whole beef shares, you can customize your cuts.

There are two ways you can order your beef trough us:

Single Cow Share Order

Order directly through us the size you want. We will match you with other people who have requested the same beef cut until the cow share is filled. for example, it would take two people with half beef orders to fill an order. In any case, we try our best to make all of our customers happy!
